Finger Cymbals / Zils / Zills / Zagat
Notes by Juanita Johns – 06/05
There are several ways one can use them:
With the rhythm (Beledi, Chifitelli, Masmoudi, Karsilama, etc.) Usually drums, but sometimes other instruments. You don’t have to know these rhythms perfectly, but should know the basic heavy beats and concepts.
Against the rhythm: Overlay – Gallop, rolls, alternating. Skip measures, half time, double time.
With the melody: Nice for a change, but use sparingly.
With body moves: Such as alternating with fast side-to-side hip moves.
Accents: As you hear them, perhaps in conjunction with accented body movements.
Embellish with flourishes and add spaces (some parts of the music are best left alone, such as intricate drumming, quieter parts of the music). Embellishments usually work well with the simpler rhythms.
Don’t play one continuous pattern – break it up for variety.
Produce different sounds:
Bell-like ring – Hit on the edges and open quickly. Hands partially open, but hold closer if faster.
Clack – fingers rest against while hitting, providing a flatter/muted sound.
Clicks – on the edges for a quieter, muted sound.
Ring – Shake one hand allowing them to strike each other or shake both hands together.
Intensity – Play quietly or loudly.
Practice: Start with listening to just drum rhythms or music with heavy beat. Then listen for ideas on variety. Alternate practicing speed and accuracy.
New to performing with zills? Give it a try – wear them during performance and don’t feel pressured to use them the whole time - just use them for a few accents.
Experienced? Get fancy – Use opposite hands; play them in a variety of arm positions. Experiment! Mix and match! This is your time to express yourself and be creative.
